I build my kingdom, defend it against monsters and start all over again.

I'm not a fan of hectic city-building games. But sometimes a title comes along that captivates me straight away. One that keeps me up late into the night with its mixture of strategy, risk and motivation. This game hooked me so much that at some point I even dreamt in building plans. I owe all this to Super Fantasy Kingdom, a game that merges construction and survival into a fascinating whole.

During the day, I design my city, plan resources and think about which buildings I should construct next. As soon as the sun disappears, the chaos begins. Monsters break through the darkness, storming towards my gates and barely giving me time to catch my breath. Every new day feels like a victory, every night like a test that makes me even better.

The cycle in Super Fantasy Kingdom

In Super Fantasy Kingdom failure does not mean the end, but the beginning of something new. Every attempt brings progress, be it through new heroes, unlocked areas or valuable insights. The monsters may destroy everything I've built up, but with every new start I grow a little more. Admittedly: The concept is not new, but the charm forgives the one or other defeat.

The game creates a special rhythm. It is a mixture of Strategy and patience that makes me scrutinize every detail. Every mistake becomes a lesson, every victory a small triumph. This cycle of construction and destruction gives the game a tension that lasts for a long time.

Heroes, guards and tactical variety

At the start of each round, I choose a guardian who determines my defense style. Whether the ice priestess freezes opponents or a knight fights on the front line, each character noticeably changes the feel of the game. Every decision has an impact on the rest of the game and forces me to rethink my strategy.

The large selection of units is particularly appealing. Over fifty different characters can be recruited, from classic warriors to magical beings. I have seen vampires fighting side by side with Halflings while catapults hurl rocks over their heads. Each combination brings new possibilities that only fully unfold with experience.

Resources and decisions

Building my city is a constant balancing act. Wood, stone and gold are the basis of every defense. At the beginning, the shortage is omnipresent and forces me to set priorities. Do I build walls, invest in troops or improve production? Every decision shapes the course of my game.

The challenge is perfect... As is usually the case, the game mechanics require forward thinking. If you are too quick expands, risks collapse, and those who act too cautiously will be overrun. This constant tension between planning and risk ensures that no two passages are the same.

Nostalgia meets modern ideas

Visual effect Super Fantasy Kingdom is like an homage to classic construction games, combined with modern elements. The charming pixel style, the clear structure of the menus and the calm but challenging gameplay create a captivating atmosphere. Every screen seems alive, every character appears to be part of a larger story.

The game is also technically impressive. It runs stably, responds precisely and offers a pleasantly fluid gaming experience. Everything feels seamless, which is particularly noticeable during long sessions. The result is a gaming experience that is both nostalgic and contemporary.

An endless Super Fantasy Kingdom

Super Fantasy Kingdom develops its strength with each subsequent attempt. The game world remains familiar, but is constantly evolving. New heroes, improved abilities and unexpected encounters keep motivation high.

The game requires patience, but rewards it handsomely. It encourages the urge to keep going in order to create an even better run. This feeling of never really being finished is what makes the game so appealing. Once you get into this cycle, it's hard to get out again.

The post Why Super Fantasy Kingdom won't let me go first appeared on SPIELECHECK | English.

With feathers, spacesuits and lots of wit, it's all about Star Birds on an intergalactic journey. The colorful construction and resource management game from Toukana Interactive and in a nutshell promises a unique adventure through the universe. It offers not only classic construction and automation mechanics, but also a touch of mystery and a pinch of science. Time to spread your wings and explore the infinite expanses of space!

Explore the vastness of space in Star Birds

Star Birds takes players into a minimalist yet fascinating universe. In the role of the Star Birds, a group of space-faring birds, you embark on an important mission through space. The journey begins with the scanning of asteroids on which resources such as metals and other exotic materials can be found. With the help of a rover, these asteroids can be explored and their secrets revealed.

A highlight of the game is the 360° base building. From space potatoes to hidden Easter eggs, the procedurally generated asteroids offer countless possibilities for creative base building. With a colorful graphic style inspired by the well-known Kurzgesagt videos, every base is a visual delight. The mysterious story that takes place in the background gives the game a special atmosphere that fans of in short will love.

Automation and management

At its core Star Birds efficient management of resources and the automation of production processes. Players build production facilities to process the extracted raw materials and produce more advanced goods. These goods are essential to meet the needs of the Star Birds and advance their mission.

The resource and production processes are inspired by real science, which gives the game added depth. Countless procedurally generated asteroids ensure that every game is different and always offers new challenges. The rogue-lite elements and the high replay value make Star Birds into an experience that captivates players time and time again.

Find mysterious artifacts and hidden secrets in Star Birds

In addition to the structure and automation Star Birds also with a mysterious storyline hidden deep in the vastness of space. While the Star Birds as they advance their mission, they repeatedly come across mysterious artifacts and unknown technologies. These discoveries not only offer exciting quests, but also parts of the game's fascinating story.

Players have to meet the unusual needs of their Star Birds and constantly optimize production in the process. This makes the gameplay not only varied, but also challenging. The intuitive and motivating game mechanics ensure that every discovery and every optimization is rewarding and satisfying.

A small change of course

Interestingly enough Star Birds from the same developers who created the enchanting game Village romance have created. Dorfromantik is a tranquil puzzle game where the aim is to create an idyllic landscape from hexagonal tiles. With its relaxed gameplay and beautiful aesthetics, it has captured many puzzle hearts... including mine. It shows that Toukana Interactive has a knack for creating unique and engaging gaming experiences.

While Dorfromantik impresses with its relaxed atmosphere, the Star Birds on the combination of strategic construction and exploration of the unknown. However, both games show the developers' attention to detail and creative vision.

Adventure is calling! Off to new stars!

However, not until 2025 does the game offer a unique blend of base building, resource management and space exploration. With its colorful art style and short-form vibes, it is not only a feast for the eyes, but also a game that impresses with its mechanical depth. The procedurally generated asteroids ensure that every game is different and always offers new challenges.

Anyone looking for a game that requires both strategic thinking and creative freedom will find it here. It invites you to slip into the role of an interstellar pioneer and explore the infinite expanses of space. The Star Birds are waiting for their commanders - ready to unravel the secrets of the universe and discover new horizons that no bird has ever seen before.

The post Star Birds - Intergalactic fluttering between asteroids first appeared on SPIELECHECK | English.

Roguelikes and roguelites have a lot in common, but the differences are crucial. While roguelikes like NetHack rely on a complete restart after each death, roguelites like Hades offer permanent upgrades and story progression. Both genres have their merits - depending on your personal taste between hard challenge and constant improvement.

The post Roguelike vs Roguelite - these are the differences first appeared on SPIELECHECK | English.

The genre of roguelikes and roguelites has enjoyed great popularity for years. But although the two terms are often used interchangeably, there are crucial differences. Anyone who has ever fought their way through Hades, Slay the Spire or Dead Cells knows that not every game with randomly generated levels and permadeath is automatically a roguelike. But what exactly distinguishes the two genres? And why does this distinction in particular always cause discussion among gamers?

The roots of Roguelike - a question of tradition

The term "roguelike" goes back to the game Rogue from the year 1980. This text-based dungeon crawler RPG laid the foundations for an entire genre. The main features: procedurally generated dungeons, turn-based battles and permanent death. If you die, you start all over again - with no saved progress. These mechanics were adopted by later games such as NetHack, Angband and Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup and further developed.

A key distinguishing feature of classic roguelikes is the turn-based gameplay. While modern offshoots such as The Binding of Isaac or Crypt of the NecroDancer While the game focuses on real time, the classic roguelike remains a strategic, decelerated experience. Another typical feature is the lack of a meta-progression system: each round begins with the same conditions, with no permanent improvements for later rounds.

Roguelites - The evolution of the genre

Over time, many developers have begun to diversify the roguelike genre. This gave rise to the "roguelite" - a term that first became popular around 2013. A roguelite adopts many elements of the roguelike genre, but loosens up some of the hardest rules. This often means permanent upgrades, unlockable abilities or progressive story progression.

A prime example of a Roguelite is Hades from Supergiant Games. Here, new dialogs and story elements are unlocked with each run, and Zagreus can permanently improve his equipment. This clearly distinguishes it from classic roguelikes, where each attempt is independent of the previous run. The situation is similar with Dead Cellswhich offers randomly generated levels and permadeath, but also contains a permanent progression system with new weapons and abilities.

Not all permadeaths are the same

A common misunderstanding is the equation of Roguelikes with the concept of permadeath. While both genres use permadeath as a central element, the way in which death is handled in the game differs. In classic roguelikes, death means the complete loss of all progress. Each playthrough is a challenge in its own right, with no lasting benefits.

In Roguelites, on the other hand, there is usually some form of reward or improvement that goes beyond death. So in Slay the Spire new cards can be unlocked for later runs, in Rogue Legacy deceased heroes leave behind gold for future generations and in Hades Zagreus gradually unlocks new weapons, god bonuses and story elements. This form of progression is what distinguishes a roguelite from a roguelike.

Why the distinction is important

Even if the terms are often mixed up, the separation has a meaning. If you are interested in a classic roguelike like Tales of Maj'Eyal or Cogmind decides, expects a different Gaming experience than with a Roguelite like Rogue Legacy 2 or FTL: Faster Than Light. While Roguelikes are often merciless, strategic challenges, Roguelites often offer a balance of frustration and progress.

Ultimately, it's a question of preference: Those looking for the purist thrill, where every mistake means an immediate restart, are well advised to play a roguelike. On the other hand, those who appreciate the replay value of an evolving character will find the Roguelite the ideal mix of challenge and reward.

Roguelike or Roguelite - the personal hardcore level decides

Whether Rogue, Hades or Dead Cells - Both genres have their raison d'être. While purists prefer classic roguelikes, many enjoy the more modern roguelite variant with permanent progression. So if you are resistant to frustration and are looking for a real challenge, go for a roguelike. If, on the other hand, you like reward systems but still want a tough level of difficulty, you will find what you are looking for in Roguelites.

Or to quote Zagreus from Hades to say: "I think I'll try one more time..."

The post Roguelike vs Roguelite - these are the differences first appeared on SPIELECHECK | English.
