For glory and honor - The multiplayer action game Warhaven, brought to the market by the publisher NEXON Games Korean Corporation, players are allowed to Chain mail and iron sights to compete in epic battles. Designed as a medieval battlefield, the budding knights must let their swords, spears and axes do the talking to lead their team to victory.

From nobody to Warhaven legend

For Warhaven, the developer studio NEXON Games has a total of six different character classes and four additional special classes on offer, with which budding warriors can plunge into the fray. The classes differ The swordsmen, for example, are of average strength and well suited to various attack positions. Axe-wielders are somewhat more powerful and are always at the front of an attack wave. Spearmen, on the other hand, are much faster and more agile, but prefer to attack from the second line, as they could quickly lose out in a direct clash.

Warhaven
Opponents as far as the eye can see. The battles in Warhaven offer plenty of action.

If players are successful on the battlefield, they collect points for defeating enemies or completing mission objectives. Once they have earned enough points, they transform into one of the so-called immortals. These are legendary heroes who can eliminate entire groups of enemies with powerful special attacks. These Legends on the battlefield are revered and feared, and a warrior who succeeds in bringing an immortal back to the afterlife earns a lot of points.

Helpful environment

In Warhaven, players should keep a watchful eye on the different battlefields explore. There are things everywhere that can be used tactically. This doesn't just mean walls to hide behind or stairs for an elevated attack position. There are also barrels of gunpowder that can be turned into explosive surprises with targeted shots.

Some levels also offer ballistas or war cannons that can be used to provide fire cover for your own team. Siege devices, on the other hand, allow players to unlock new paths to get to certain points on the map more quickly. Caution is advised here, however, as the opponents these shortcuts can also be torn down again. Nevertheless, it is worth exploring the tactical elements of each map in order to gain the upper hand in the heated PvP battles.

Big chain rattle in Warhaven

To create the feeling of medieval battle better transfer, the developers of NEXON Games and have given Warhaven extensive theaters of war where they can let off steam. Players can choose one of the two battle parties and go to war either alone or with two friends. The teams can each have a total of 16 brave warriors in their ranks, allowing for large-scale battles with a maximum of 32 players.

Warhaven
On the battlefield, many a fighter will find heavy weapons to be wary of.

To ensure that the armed warriors don't just run around blindly, the game offers different game modes. For example, there is a skirmish mode in which the teams have to fight for certain points on the map and hold them for as long as possible in order to collect points. In Onslaught mode, on the other hand, players have to destroy the recruits of the opposing teams as far back into their own base as possible. The so-called Arms Race is also interesting. In this mode, players start with only a base defense and have to find the weapons scattered around the map as quickly as possible in order to defend themselves. The game modes are varied and ensure that the medieval PvP game feels fresh and action-packed.

Can gamers make the world a better place with just a mouse and controller? This is the question the Knowledge series Flick Flack in their episode "Can the world be saved with video games?" and shed light on a few interesting examples of playful video games and group intelligence.

Playful science aids

Many players may have been surprised when they found an old arcade machine on board the Sanctuary in the 2019 shooter Borderlands 3, which had a slightly different mini-game in store for them. The game, which bears the name Borderlands Science, challenges the players toto sort sequences of DNA sequences in a playful way. This works in a similar way to the game Candy Crush, so that identical pairs are resolved and players collect points for this.

What looks like a simple Mini-Game but was actually a gigantic collection of data based on the analysis and evaluation of real DNA sequences. Millions of players were able to solve what would have taken a handful of scientists dozens of years.

With controllers instead of cape - Can the world be saved with video games?
Here, we take a closer look... Thousands of players can be part of a big picture and provide a valuable service to science.

Players will find a similar approach in Eve Online. In the Space simulation players can search for new exoplanets by analyzing the light spectra of stars in the galaxy. The data collected will help scientists to search for new planets more effectively in the real world.

Video games and the end of the game - the untapped potential

The examples of games mentioned rely on so-called citizen science, in which a problem is not only solved by one group by trained scientists and researchers, but instead uses a large mass of people. Even if the million players don't have the necessary scientific background knowledge, they may be able to playfully find approaches that researchers have been looking for for years.

With controllers instead of cape - Can the world be saved with video games?
Complex tasks can be mastered with the help of creative tasks.

The idea actually has a lot of potential. Video games such as Minecraft or World of Warcraft are, after all on the regularly played by millions of gamers around the world. If you want to give these gamers a task - prepared in a playful way and with appropriate incentives such as special loot - it is quite likely that the masses will find interesting solutions to the problem in order to collect the reward. How extensive the Citizen Science in Games The future will have to show, but the approach is promising and should certainly generate more Scientists motivate people to seek help from gamers through video games.

Whether you engage in combat, fight for supremacy on planets from a first-person perspective or team up with other pilots is up to you.

The post Star Citizen - The next generation of space simulations first appeared on SpieleCheck.

]]>
As part of the official announcement of Star Citizen In 2010, the developers at Cloud Imperium Games left no doubt that we were dealing with one of the most ambitious video game productions of all time. The developers, led by industry veteran and Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts, set themselves the goal of offering you a persistent and continuously evolving universe.

In addition, the times when space simulations focused on individual aspects such as exploration or the Space combat will be over for good with Star Citizen. Chris Roberts' new project will offer you nothing less than a second life in a virtual universe spanning 100 galaxies, combining areas such as exploration, trading, thrilling dogfights, mining and other gameplay features.

The crowdfunding campaign for the space simulation set a new record, with which the developers managed to raise more than half a billion US dollars by September 2022.

Developers rely on different modules in Star Citizen

One of the special features is the structure of the game, which is divided into different Modules has been subdivided. On the gameplay side, this concept means that you can access the content and modes you want quickly and easily. The developers, in turn, benefit from the fact that they can further develop the space MMO in a targeted manner.

Star Citizen
You can share your life on spaceships with other players.

Because even more than ten years after the start of development, it is still a long way from completion. As the creative minds around Chris Roberts are planning, their Ambitious project in the best case supported and continuously developed over decades.

In addition to content such as new ships, properties and bases, completely new game modes and features are also planned. So it won't be boring for the foreseeable future.

80 spaceships, varied modes and more

The developers also promise more than 80 spaceships with which you can explore the Galaxy and seamlessly land on planets or in space ports to explore them, interact with other users or trade. When it comes to the spaceships, however, the developer studio has not been entirely without criticism, as selected content can only be purchased for real money and can sometimes cost four-figure sums.

Star Citizen
You need resources to get ahead. If in doubt, you'll have to do it yourself.

The focus is on interaction with other users, whom you will encounter throughout the game world. Whether you engage in intense dogfights, fight for supremacy on planets from a first-person perspective or team up with other pilots to form squadrons and explore the galaxy is up to you.

A plus point that should not be underestimated: while other representatives of the genre rely on procedurally generated worlds, the majority of the planets and content here were created by hand.

Squadron 42: A Star Citizen campaign for single players

Even if Star Citizen in its basic features is considered a classic MMO In the long term, solo players should also get their money's worth in the game, which was designed for numerous players to share a world. For example, in the single-player campaign called Squadron 42, which features a brand new History tells.

As with the main game, the developers of Squadron 42 did not let themselves get carried away and signed up a number of well-known stars to support the characters and the story of the campaign. Breathe life into it. These include Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Harry Treadaway, Liam Cunningham and Gillian Anderson.

The only catch is that while the MMO part is already playable and is regularly expanded, it is still unclear when Squadron 42 will actually be released.

Off to the pit - In the extension Fallout 76 - Expeditions: The Pitt the development team from Bethesda sends you into (un)known territories. For the first time, you can leave the borders of the Appalachian Mountains behind and take a trip to the mysterious world of Pittsburgh.

New challenges

Fallout 76 - Expeditions: The Pitt is a free update that presents The Pitt as a new explorable area. Instead of the completely freely accessible city, this is a slightly smaller version that you can roam through to complete repeatable challenges. Fans of the action series in the post-apocalypse of Bethesda can still look forward to a reunion. After all, The Pitt, as Pittsburgh is called by the looters, was one of the big cities in Fallout 3 that players had to fight their way through. The ruins of the city are now a field of rubble where various factions fight over every last useful crumb.

Fallout 76 - Expeditions: The Pitt
The Pitt is not for the faint-hearted, so you should bring the appropriate level with you when you enter.

Beware of the enemy in Fallout 76

On the one hand, there are the aforementioned looters who steal everything that isn't bolted to the floor. They may not look like it, but they know how to handle a weapon and they don't like unfamiliar faces! On the other hand, the union is fighting for dominance in Pittsburgh and is always looking for new recruits who will sacrifice themselves for their cause in battle.

In addition, creatures such as the Trogs roam the streets of Pittsburgh. These mutants usually move on all fours and are fast, agile and damned bloodthirsty. Careless visitors are quickly consigned to the next menu by the trogs and hunted down with corresponding bloodthirstiness and relentlessness. There are also other dangers waiting in the shadows, but you'll realize that when you set foot in The Pitt yourself.

Jump start

With Fallout 76 - Expeditions: The Pitt, Bethesda is delivering a few new features to make it easier for beginners in particular to get to grips with the game world. Among other things, new players can look forward to improved starting equipment and a polished version of the Whitespring Resort. Here they will also find lots of random missions so that they can let off steam in the Appalachian Mountains before embarking on the not exactly easy exploration tour through The Pitt.

Experienced players should also make their way to the Whitespring resort. After all, they can use the daily random quests to improve their favor with the so-called responders, who are in charge at Whitespring. The responders also have a Vertibird in their possession, which is the only Road to Pittsburgh represents. You need ultracells to be able to take a flight and you can only get them if you complete the corresponding missions for the responders.

With an Ultra Cell, you can then take a trip to The Pitt to face the challenges there. However, you should not start the expedition with a School trip or a camping trip. The Pitt is a brutal place and careless adventures quickly end in crossfire... or as a feast for the trogs. That's why you should be at least level 50 before you enter Pittsburgh.

Fallout 76 - Expeditions: The Pitt
Pride goeth before a fall, or is wisdom out again?

Exploration thirst quencher: Fallout 76 - Expeditions: The Pitt brings a lot to the table

Bethesda has already announced that Fallout 76 - Expeditions: The Pitt will not be the only challenge you can take on along with other adventures in the Fallout MMO can contest. Something big and exciting is coming your way. We're talking about the Nuca Cola World Tour, which will also be delivered to your refuge as an update. The exact scope of the expansion is still unclear, but it is certain that everything will revolve around the popular soft drink. After all, it has a firm place in the Fallout series. So if your trips to Pittsburgh have left you parched and in need of a refreshing change of pace, be sure to keep your eyes peeled and see what the next few weeks have in store for you!

Tips for the wasteland

Not all scrap is the same: Loot, loot, loot... Don't be squeamish when collecting items lying around. Everything in Fallout can be converted into usable materials that are needed for building and modding.

Your inventory is limited: Make sure that you regularly clear your inventory of junk and unnecessary items so that your weight doesn't become your downfall on the road. In the worst case, a bag that is too full of great things will make you very slow, which is very counterproductive in a dangerous situation.

The right building site for your camp: The small wonder box with which you can set up your camp should be set up in strategic locations. Use slopes, trees or buildings that can hide your camp. Pro tip: Deathclaw Island is a very poor strategic location. However, if you have done so, you can dismantle your camp with just a few clicks and set it up again somewhere else.

Stay fit with food and drink: Eating and drinking regularly keeps you happy... and you have smaller waistlines as a result... *badumz*

Keep an eye on stamina points / AP: Important character actions require stamina points. If you have none left, decisive actions cannot be carried out or are interrupted in an unfavorable way. You are therefore well advised to put a few more points into your stamina.

The colors of the map: If you take a closer look at the map, you will notice that it contains colored areas. Imagine if raiders and responders were the only enemies... that would be very boring. Even in Fallout 76, red is a signal color that can literally end the flow of the game with acute blood diarrhea. So - especially at the beginning - do NOT run into these areas. The toxic valley (green) is best suited for levels 1 - 15. You'll find out the rest for yourself. πŸ˜‰ By the way, there is a map with great features here.

Be active: Are there fights nearby? Take part! Experience points and rewards are waiting for you.

The post What's the story behind Lost Ark? - An opinion first appeared on SpieleCheck.

]]>
Somehow half the gaming world seems to be in "Lost Ark" fever. So the game must have something to offer. It's free-to-play, so try it out straight away! And it captivated me. Could it be because I have a penchant for MMORPGs one way or another?

A dream for fashionistas

It follows the usual pattern: create character, select class, etc. Even here I was a little overwhelmed by the visuals in the game. To my eyes, the characters look extremely cheesy. And the clothes too! I chose a female character and wondered whether I had landed in a Japanese cartoon series for adults. The pants I was allowed to wear could at best be described as knickers. During the course of the game, I was also allowed to wear a leg dress, which at least covered one of my legs. The rest of the fabric was invested in outerwear. But not to cover the front of my torso, of course. No, there are sweeping sleeves, wings, cape-like things... all sorts of things fluttering around the back or sides of my torso. However, it doesn't matter what new equipment I find ingame, everything is perfectly color-coordinated. For fashionistas definitely a Dream.

After the initial shock has passed, the game finally starts. No surprises here either: starting area, quests in which you have to kill, collect and run back and forth. So far, everything as usual. What I find good: You don't run pointlessly from the quest giver to the other side of the area and then have to go back again, but you accept the quest and the fulfillment then usually goes in the direction you have to go anyway to get to the next quest. You then hand in the quest a little further on, so that you automatically walk through the whole area in the direction in which the next area is waiting. In this way, you wander through different regions, are sent to new continents and can discover all kinds of things.

The somewhat different hack and slay

So what's different? There is an adventure folder. This is a kind of book in which the progress of the respective continent is saved. In addition to the main quest, there are two special side quests (and plenty of others, but they are not saved in the tome), hidden storiesspecial recipes, area bosses, collectible items, viewpoints and mokokos that you can search for and collect. This means that hunters and collectors of achievements can get their money's worth from the very first minute of the game. There are gradual rewards for achieving the tome progress. There are also various NPCs with whom you can build up relationships. Through gestures, gifts or simple conversations. Of course, there are rewards for reaching the various relationship levels. Some of them are simply quite nice, others are needed for recipes, for example.

While you move through the Continents there are also dungeons for the low level area, which you have to tackle alone or with a maximum of four players. You also learn how to mine ore, chop trees, collect plants, fish and dig up relics before you reach max level. At level 50, you have a huge selection of activities to choose from. Raids, dungeons, arenas, PVP, chaos dungeons, seafaring, many small islands on which there are
nice quest lines or special events and much more. You can upgrade your equipment by collecting card sets or making engravings, for example.

What you need for traveling

There are a variety of rewards that can be exchanged for improvements or simply fun things at various merchants. There are companions, mounts and costumes. In other words, everything an MMORPG character needs. And there are effects. Lots of them. When you're traveling in a group, it can happen that you're overwhelmed by the animations of Spellbullets, bombs, etc., you can hardly see anything other than colorful lights. If, like me, you don't take the whole thing too seriously, it's more entertaining than annoying. Especially as I opted for a bard who also triggers her spells with her harp. In other words, she produces more or less pretty sounds with every keystroke. The only thing that took some getting used to was the controls. You don't move around with WASD, but with a click of the mouse. As with Diablo z. B. is not completely unknown and in no way takes away from the fun of the game. However, the game is a little less fun due to the many bots. Sometimes they are quite helpful.

If you're in a difficult situation and are being attacked by lots of enemies, it can be nice to have two characters stuck in each other, with names as if their heads have fallen onto the keyboard, to help you. But basically it's rather annoying when they kill all the enemies directly in front of you or are so close to the quest giver that you can only click on them after the umpteenth attempt. The developers are working on this. The latest update on this topic was released in mid-May.

Oh, I forgot! You get your own fortress. Here you can research potions and new ships, among other things, and produce. Unfortunately, I can't say any more about this. I haven't dealt with this topic before. Sorry.

Conclusion: After just over 100 hours of play, I still feel like I've only explored a fraction of the possibilities. I'm sticking with it and having fun!

The open-world game Myth of Empires from developer Angela Game and publisher Antiidelay gives gamers all over the world a great deal of freedom thanks to its modular design. Set in a war-torn Asian environment in the 3rd century AD, the gamer therefore puts everything on one card, or rather the three essential pillars of the game: because without building a fortress, expanding an enormously powerful army and conquering enemy cities - sometimes in the form of epic battles - it is difficult to build an empire!

Triumphant rise to conqueror

The fascinating combination of sandbox survival and Medieval multiplayer works due to dynamic battles and significantly larger dimensions. The simple search for a safe place in the landscape is not enough for success. Because according to a heroic motto, there can and will only be one ruler. Gamers must first earn their way up from soldier to commander - mainly by going into battle against other players. Over a total of 16 levels, the personal career can be expanded in this way, so that even the status of a nobleman beckons. But that's not all, the player decides who they want to be, starting at the very bottom of the warrior pecking order.

Of course, the sword warrior - fighting in the front line - enjoys more glory and laurels. But the smart strategist behind these lines also succeeds in Myth of Empires all the way to the top. Completely varied battles will decide honor and awards in the near future. On a total of 64 square kilometers of game world, gamers will not be able to avoid each other for long. Ranged combat specialists in watchtowers and the universally deployable vagabonds give gamers a better overview. The guard radius classification for close range and the command for a fixed Defense position reveal more chances of success. If the soon-to-be warlord now embarks on diplomatic channels with the NPC factions, there is great potential for expanding his power. And so the hunt for enemy soldiers can begin between flowing streams and towering mountain peaks.

Myth of Empires offers more than just theaters of war

The focus is clearly on the sometimes large-scale battles. However, it is precisely the details knitted around this and the different start of the game that offer the special appeal compared to genre-typical alternatives and combine several components. Exploring the environment is the main focus, especially in the early hours of the game. With small tasks, the future warriors first gain some much-needed experience. Craft recipes for climbing the archaic career ladder. Thanks to this, the player develops tools and, in the fight for survival, even more important weapons. The confrontation with fair game and the occasional NPC provides further experience - sometimes fleeing from an overpowered opponent without a weapon or shield is more promising.

In addition to recruiting new soldiers, the player is also involved in taming horses - okay, as mounts for war - the basis for the cavalry era. In addition, the collection of raw materials must not be lost sight of. It serves to expand the camp into a truly imposing fortress. This location should be chosen with plenty of open space and preferably on hills. The more defensive and resistant to competing attacks it is built over time, the more advantageous it will be for your own dominance in the game. And then the warrior goes hunting - for game and opponents. The survival mode slowly moves to the second level and the successful claiming of more and more land becomes the main task. The parallel focus on balancing an unbeatable offensive and defensive presence makes the undertaking quite challenging.

In particular, the scenic framework conditions also offer a variety of opportunities. decisive impulses and of course beautiful settings. Sandstorms, blizzards and toxic gases make survival even more difficult. The narrowness of snowy passes or the difficulty of making progress in dense forests can also be used tactically in Myth of Empires. The complexity of increasing fame points from various quests, conquering parts of the map and collecting taxes, for example, will soon bring in some wealth. We can't wait for the final release and one or two content upgrades. If you like grinding and can cope with convoluted build systems, this open-world game should be something for you.

In the action role-playing game Weird West players must find their way in a hostile, imaginative interpretation of the Wild West. In this version of the American frontier from pre-modern times, however, magical elements, surreal creatures and dark forces are at work.

At the center of the plot is a group of anti-heroes, which is built up by the players as in a classic RPG. The top-down perspective reinforces the initial impression that this is a Role play old school games like Pillars of Eternity or Divinity: Original Sin.

Playful freedom like in immersive simulations

Behind Weird Westpublished by Devolver Digital, however, is the team from WolfEye Studios, the new studio of French video game developer RaphaΓ«l Colantonio. He is known as the head of Arkane Studios and was one of the creative teams that developed immersive simulations such as Dishonored and Prey.

That's why Weird West is saving itself the second look clearly from classic adventure role-playing games. On the one hand, players can move their characters freely in the game world and do not have to adhere to a grid or guidelines limited by action points for the movement of the characters. Battles are also fought in real time and are more akin to the chaotic action of a top-down shooter.

According to the developers, how skillfully players use abilities, weapons and powers will be decisive for success in combat. The Fallout series stands for large game worlds with epic storylines, crazy characters and a post-apocalyptic atmosphere that is simply eerily beautiful. In five solo role-playing games and a handful of smaller spin-offs to date, players have been able to explore the world after the explosion of the atomic bombs and become the savior or the destroyer of the new era. This made the release of Fallout 76 as an MMORPG all the more critical. With Fallout 76: Steel Reign, the open-world game is now getting a new DLC. But is the expansion even worth it?

The difficult start of Fallout 76

In the run-up to the release of Fallout 76, publisher Bethesda announced that there would be a Large game world with an abundance of quests, NPCs and loot in which players could spend hundreds of hours playing. What the players got, however, was a downright empty game world, a large portion of bugs and server problems and hardly any meaningful equipment options. The wave of indignation was not long in coming because the game was simply unfinished and was released far too early.

Since then, Bethesda has been working on ironing out its mistakes in Fallout 76. In previous updates such as Wastelanders, more NPCs were finally introduced to liven up the dead MMO world. The One Wasteland expansion then brought multiplayer improvements such as adaptive enemy levels and legendary skills for your own characters. With Steel Dawn, the iconic Brotherhood of Steel entered the post-apocalyptic world. Fallout 76: Steel Reign is now set to follow on from this update.

New wind or new miss

Fallout 76: Steel Reign will continue the story missions about the Brotherhood of Steel and at the same time represent a provisional conclusion. According to the developers, this does not mean that more content about the knights in their power armor will not be released in the future, but for now the current story will be completed.

However, players will also be given new options to improve their own characters and further customize them for the post-apocalypse world. Among other things, the update will introduce a crafting system for legendary weapons and armor. This is made possible by the so-called Legendary Cores, which players can loot in order to combine them with their favorite weapons. In addition, Steel Reign now gives players the opportunity to reroll their character points if their current stats make them more like cannon fodder than end-time heroes. The power armor, that you can also be upgraded to legendary armor. The update also fixes some bugs and glitches to improve the gaming experience.

Most players who have already been able to test the update as a beta are satisfied. It is a good expansion that takes Fallout 76 one step closer to becoming a solid MMO. The only criticism is that the story content is far too short. Nevertheless Fallout 76: Steel Reign a few entertaining hours in a world characterized by destruction and madness.
