Rat kingdom - When the war between rats, mice and lizards rages

Ratten Reich is an early access strategy game that pits rats, mice and lizards against each other in a steampunk war. With a unique aesthetic, destructible buildings and tactical depth, the indie game has a lot of potential, even if the unit AI still needs improvement.

In Rat kingdom, an indie strategy game from the developer METALLADLERSTUDIO, the ambitions of different animal nations collide in a merciless, diesel-punk world. Published by Crytivo and released in Early Access on August 9, 2024, this fictional setting takes players into a war that spans three continents and leaves no room for peace. Here, the ongoing war corrodes the societies of rats, mice, cockroaches and lizards, while advanced steam engines and diesel engines contribute to unimaginable destructive power.

A look at the game reveals that it not only offers tactical depth, but also a dark world that could bring tears to the eyes of steampunk fans - with joy or pure horror.

When rats become soldiers: Units and factions in Rat Empire

The heart of Rat empire are the different Fractions and their impressive arsenal. Included are the RR (rats), FMR (mice), ERS (lizards) and RD (monitor lizards). Each faction comes with its own lovingly designed unit models, which are not only visually impressive, but also offer a lot in terms of strategy. Each unit is described in detail on unit cards to give players a precise overview of their deployment options on the battlefield.

Tactics play a crucial role: infantry must cleverly hide behind destructible buildings while targeting the enemy. But the Soldiers are not always easy to control - at least not in the current Early Access stage. Many reports from players criticize the sluggishness of the units, especially when it comes to reacting to orders or enemy grenades. Nevertheless, the game's potential shines through thanks to the clever factions and diverse units.

Theaters of war of a special kind

Rat empire offers a wide range of unique battlefields spanning three continents. The central continent is reminiscent of the horrors of the First World War with its swampy ground and trenches. Troop movements are made very difficult here, which is particularly challenging for tactically-minded players. However, those who love outwitting enemies in open terrain will be happy on the desert continent, where Sandstorms and dunes for unpredictable battles, while the eastern continent is difficult to capture due to strong military bases.

The destructible buildings in particular offer many opportunities for creative tactics. Sometimes it makes more sense to sacrifice the protection of a building in order to strengthen your own offensive. This interactive environment forces players to remain flexible and constantly rethink their strategy. But beware: there are still a few issues in Early Access. Some players have described the soldiers' reaction to cover orders as "too slow". The development team will certainly make improvements here in the coming months.

Steampunk meets diesel punk: the dark aesthetics of Ratten Reich

Graphically has Rat empire has a lot to offer if you like the mix of steampunk and dieselpunk aesthetics. The look is reminiscent of alternate history scenarios in which steam-powered machines and diesel-powered monsters roll across the battlefields. This visual design runs through the entire game: from the characters to the battlefields, everything looks gritty, brutal and unforgiving.

The soundtrack underlines this atmosphere perfectly. Menacing, industrial sounds accompany the battles and allow players to immerse themselves in the world. At the same time, the soundscape on the battlefield makes for an intense experience - gunshots, explosions and the screams of the soldiers all play their part. However, as is often the case with Early Access titles, there is still room for improvement: Some reports mention short freeze frames and game bugs, but these are hard to avoid when starting the game at this early stage.

Lots of potential, lots of work: the early access dilemma

As is the case with many Early Access titles, the Rat empire is not delivered as a finished product. Rather, it is a solid basis that will be further developed over time. Some players are already enthusiastic about the atmosphere and the tactical possibilities, while others are hoping for improvements to the controls. The unit AI and the reaction to cover commands in particular are the focus of criticism.

Nevertheless, many agree that with sufficient updates and player feedback, the Rat empire in a few years to become a real highlight in the Strategy genre. Its basic structure is already reminiscent of games like Iron Harvest or Man of War II, except that here the animal protagonists bring a very special touch to the genre. The developers have emphasized that they are relying on player feedback to constantly improve the game.

The battle of the rodents is far from over

In summary, it can be said that Rat empire offers the potential for a great strategy adventure - if the developers keep at it and successfully implement the many ideas. The unique world of warring rats and Lizards promises an incomparable gaming experience that will appeal to fans of steampunk and dieselpunk scenarios in particular. As the saying goes: even small rats can achieve great things - especially if they are well armed.
